People often say to me that I must live in an amazing house, and that it must be so well organised and so clean! I always laugh and say ‘I wish’! A good few think I’m being polite and am just pretending to make them feel better… if only! The reality is that my house is a very average 3 bed semi detached ex council house that also needs A LOT of work… and we’re doing it all ourselves whilst living in it with 2 kids and a dog 🤪😆

As you can imagine the dust and general chaos of constant building work means the house is difficult to keep clean. The organisation can also be a challenge to keep on top of because rooms aren’t finished, cupboards that need to exist don’t yet exist, walls come down, walls go up, things get ripped out, floors come up etc etc. And it’s all at a snails pace because life is busy.

If there is one thing that living in a house renovation has taught us is that you actually need very few possessions. About a year ago we had a leak from the bathroom and the dining room (future kitchen!) ceiling fell down. The mess was unreal. At that point I got rid of about 90% of our possessions because it was just impossible trying to keep the dust off everything. Although it’s still stressful, not having extra ‘stuff’ around is a huge relief and the whole house is far more manageable to live in.

The pictures here are from 2021 on the day we moved in. Stay tuned for the work in progress pics… you’ll be waiting a while for the ‘completely finished’ 😂 but let’s normalise living in less than ideal houses. Not many people have those perfect glossy magazine worthy homes and the majority of us just have to make the best of what we’ve got.

I was in Norfolk for a couple of days this week helping the @declutterdollies with a barn transformation for a wonderful couple. Huge thanks to @clare_declutterdollies , @rachel_declutterdollies and @maria_declutterdollies for having me along. It was a brilliant experience with the loveliest team of ladies. This is so true- organising your possessions and making sure that everything has a home is the best way to avoid those frustrating mornings where you can’t find your keys or your phone or a charging cable etc etc. We’ve all been there and it always seems to be when you’re short on time! Having systems in place and a home for everything means quickly being able to locate what you need and avoid the stress that comes with misplacing things! ⁣

New T-shirts arrived 🙌 I’ve a full day of house cleans today. 2 down and 1 more to go! The last house I go to on a Thursday is a treat- lots of decluttering and organising is needed as well as cleaning so it’s always great to see the little improvements after each visit

Many of us are limited with time and tackling a disorganised, messy and untidy house can seem like an impossible task. Try focusing on one room at a time, or even one small area of a room to break the task down in to more manageable chunks. A great place to start is your fridge. Try setting aside an hour or two to take everything out, deep clean and get rid of any old food or forgotten jars before putting what’s left back in a way that works for your family. A quick 15 minute sort out on one of my housekeeping jobs yesterday will hopefully make a huge difference to this client. Here I’ve organised all clothes in to practical sections- vests, tees, uniform, dresses, trousers and jackets. Bulky jumpers have been folded and popped underneath to save rail space. Colour coordinating looks awesome but for kids this is practical and will hopefully mean those exasperating ‘Mummmmmm wheres my’ conversations can be avoided!

Hello everyone! I’m Amy and welcome to Lakers Home Makeovers! I’m a mum of 2, and one half of @lakerandlane, a laundry and cleaning business here in Settle, in North Yorkshire which I run with my partner in crime/work wife @jodylane_nails. I’m now branching out in to Professional Organising and am lucky enough to have secured a spot to train with the fabulous Dilly Carter @declutterdollies from the BBCs ‘Sort Your Life Out’. I’ll be working behind the scenes on the show this weekend (how unbelievably exciting!) and learning from the best. Over the next few months I will be fine tuning by organising skills and getting all the tips I can so I can help as many of you as possible live organised, calm and clutter free lives.
